By November 19, 2018 No Comments

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Tyrone M. Wilson. I am currently the night IT Service Operations Specialist for University Hospital. My main duties are to provide assistance for various hardware and software related issues and to monitor the systems in the data center for failures or errors. I have been here for the past 13 years.  This is also how long I have been married. I am an avid movie watcher and collector.  My DVD collection currently contains over 5000 movies and TV series.  I am into superhero movies, video games, and anime. I am really a kid that has to pretend to be an adult.

What are your best technical or creative skills?

I have been told one of my best skill is relating to and end user or a customer on their level.  I explain technical terms on an easier level so that they know exactly what is going on with their system.  I picked that up working in retail service centers explaining why they needed have their system fixed. I also think being adaptable is one of my best skills too. One method that works for some people will not work on another.  You have to be able to find the method that allows you to directly relate to them.  This is a must have for me because I deal with a lot of people that are not technically inclined and are frustrated because something is not working the way it is supposed to.  Being adaptable to their issue and also relatable allows you to get them to feel at ease and get the necessary information to help them fix their problem.

Why the interest in the technology field?

When I was in the 8th grade, the computer teacher in school would allow us to come in and basically play around on the pcs. I learned a lot about how a computer worked and how to use it. At the end of the year I received an award from her for Technology student of the year.  That kind of sealed it.  Then in high school, I decided I wanted to program video games because I was really big into Nintendo during those years.  I went on to get my bachelors in Computer Science.  While I was in school, I got a job doing upgrades at CompUSA.  That got me loving to do the hardware side of computers, repairing and building.  I eventually ended up on the Geek Squad at Best Buy before moving to University Hospital.

How do you stay informed on emerging trends?

Staying informed on Tech interests was much easier when I worked in retail.  All the latest trends would pass through the stores, most being the hot items or fads of the year.  Currently, I rely on websites like Reddit to keep up on most trends.  If there is something I find really interesting, I can really dive into researching it.

What’s next on your list to learn?

Next on my list is to learn things that will increase my knowledge and become more attractive to potential employers.  Professionally, I am studying cyber security and infrastructure since it is a blossoming industry in town.  Personally, I am learning mobile application development.

What questions should we have asked, but didn’t?

Android or iOS? Android

What is my dream job outside of tech?  Cartoon voice actor or youtube /twitch streamer

Anime I am currently watching? My Hero Academia, Food Wars, One Piece, Dragonball Super, Boruto
