Interview with Software Engineer Marshall Thompson

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I’m Marshall Thompson, a Software Engineer at Intermedix (soon to be Juvare)

Why the interest in the technology field?

My interest in the technology field started when I was a kid—but I didn’t really get into it until high school when I started making a super basic website (geocities!) for my group of skateboarding friends—I also was into filming then too. I went to Augusta Tech for Graphic Design because of my interest in skateboarding and also got the TCC for web which was basic HTML, CSS and JavaScript (which i didn’t fully understand until years later, and i’m still learning things). Landed a job at a marketing firm primarily programming customizable marketing materials for variable print. Over time I gradually transitioned to writing more custom code to meet client needs. Eventually, I wanted to dive a little deeper into web development, so I quit that job and went to Iron Yard bootcamp full time for 3 months learning front end engineering. It was eye opening and I think I came out with a greater understanding of programming in general. Eventually found the job where I’m at today and really happy with it.

How do you stay informed on emerging trends?

I try to stay informed on current trends through a few outlets – Medium, Sidebar.io, JavaScript Weekly, css weekly, twitter, etc. I’m on a few email lists for things I’ve found value in the information over the last few years.

What’s next on your list to learn?

The next thing on my list to learn is C# and .Net for work – I’ll be getting more exposure to the back-end programming and am pretty excited to learn it.
