Interview with Michael Barton of Smartware Design

By March 27, 2018 No Comments

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Michael Barton, I consider myself a Softwarepreneur because I’m not only involved in software development but I look for new ideas and websites to turn into businesses. I run Smartware Design LLC with my primary contract being a full-time position as a Senior Mobile Developer with Progressive Insurance remotely on their customer-facing iOS and Android apps. I have a lot of projects going on as well, such as What’s Up Augusta, – the new way for attorneys to book rides for their clients to their appointments, in conjunction with Garage Labs, for interviewing sales positions, and many more. In the midst of all of the projects that I have going on, I manage to find time to spend with my lovely wife, Kimmy, and my baby boy, Nolan, as well as running 3 times per week and being a captain/player of softball and kickball teams for Augusta Sports Leagues. Needless to say, my life is always on go.

What are your best technical or creative skills?

I was introduced to computer science by Mrs. Tarleton in 11th grade at Evans High School learning Turbo Pascal and C++ at the time which changed my focus in life to computer programming. That brought me to Georgia Tech in where I was introduced to many languages including Java, the first object-oriented language in which I was introduced. Java has been my go-to language ever since which is why I currently enjoy Android development given that the language behind it is Java and Kotlin while also giving me the ability to bring out my creative side. I’ve worked with many companies to bring projects to life or just to maintain and build upon existing systems. It’s what I enjoy doing because I’m an inventor at heart.

Why the interest in the technology field?

As described above, it’s completely what I enjoy doing since I was introduced to building code in 11th grade. I love bleeding edge technology and the rapid change that comes with the field. In technology, you get to see the latest and greatest first and it’s the best way to stay knowledgeable on the changes coming in life.

How do you stay informed on emerging trends?

I would have said Tech Crunch in the past, but I think now with websites such as AngelList (,,,, and, not to mention social media, it’s the best way to stay up to date on the newest trends.

What’s next on your list to learn?

I’m currently in a deep dive learning Ruby on Rails with Angular and React, but in the next few months, I would like to learn more about Kotlin, Python, and TensorFlow.
